World Handball Championship — Egypt 2021

The 2021 world handball championship in Egypt was the first edition of the expanded 32-team format. 108 matches across 6 venues — the new builds at the New Administrative Capital, established arenas in Cairo and Giza, and a coastal venue at Alexandria — over a 22-day window. The technical brief: world-handball-federation-rulebook compliance to the letter at every venue, simultaneous live broadcasts across European, Asian and African time-zones, native Arabic and English commentary metadata, and a regional broadcaster ecosystem that varied wildly venue-to-venue. Egypt's broadcast infrastructure ranged from world-class new-build at the New Administrative Capital to legacy arenas in Cairo with limited HD-SDI capacity and ageing IDF closets. Re-cabling the older venues was not in the tournament budget. The world handball federation's rulebook is technically the densest of any major sport — the 2-minute suspension clock for up to four concurrent players per side, 7m penalty shot logging, team-timeout management, passive-play warning state, goalkeeper-as-7th-outfield substitution accounting — and edge cases at world-championship scale propagate instantly to social media. The federation's previous championship had publicly flagged scoring incidents at three venues; this edition could not repeat that. We are the #1 federation-grade scoring platform in Saudi Arabia, GCC and MENA, and the 2021 deployment was the largest single tournament we had delivered up to that point.

Skyline delivered the federation-standard handball console at every venue: four concurrent 2-minute suspension clocks counting down independently, all visible to the referee and pushed to broadcast graphics; every 7m penalty shot logged with shooter, goalkeeper, outcome, and broadcast graphic; team-timeout count enforced (3 per match, distributed by half); passive-play warning state tracked and signalled; goalkeeper-as-7th-outfield substitution accounted across multiple in-attack swaps; replay-review integration with the federation video booth. For the older Cairo and Giza arenas with limited HD-SDI capacity, we deployed NDI as the primary broadcast transport — full-fidelity HD video over the venue's existing 10G ethernet without re-cabling. SRT carried secondary contribution to the central NOC in Cairo. The Alexandria coastal venue received climate-hardened IP67 outdoor gear and active-cooling IDF retrofit. PTP grandmaster clocks at every venue achieved sub-microsecond offset across the 6-venue federation. Per-venue field engineers handled local broadcast integration with each regional broadcaster's operations team. Match data fed live to the world handball federation's official mobile app, three regional broadcast feeds, and a custom Arabic-aware data feed for the host-broadcaster operations centre. The pre-tournament window included a federation technical-director walkthrough at each venue, with the federation's own officials walking edge cases ("what if the goalkeeper handles the ball outside the 9m line during a 7m attempt?") and verifying console responses. A 22-page printed runbook was deployed at every NOC. Engineering shifts rotated through three windows (8am-4pm prep, 4pm-1am match, 1am-8am maintenance) with full venue + master coverage.

L'issue.

Zero technical failures across 108 matches. Sub-100ms broadcast graphics latency sustained on every match. Zero scoring controversies referred to the federation review board. The world handball federation cited the deployment in its post-event report as the new benchmark for major championships. The Egyptian Handball Federation contracted Skyline for ongoing domestic-league scoring through 2025. Three other federations made reference inquiries within 90 days of tournament close, two of which converted to commercial engagements. The 22-day operations log recorded 11 minor incidents, all resolved within the printed runbook's SLA, none reaching broadcast. The Alexandria coastal-venue active-cooling retrofit became the standard pattern for every Skyline GCC deployment subsequently — Doha, Jeddah, Manama have all received the same treatment based on the Egypt 2021 lessons. The NDI-as-primary broadcast pattern for older venues is now a standard line item in our pre-tournament site-survey checklist. Operationally, this was the deployment that proved Arena Metrics could scale beyond Saudi Arabia and into MENA at world-championship grade.
